As a matter of fact Akita Inu belongs to the oldest breed in the world. There are documents found as late as fifteenth century, which tells us about their training but the evidence of selection big certifies to prior origin.
There had been certainly dogs alike Akita in Japan, more than five thousand year ago. The Akita name was given by a Japanese prefecture, which is lokated in North of Honshu Island and probably the breed stems from there. The word INU means dog. There is none a breed which would have such abundant historical and culture past as Akita Inu.
They lived with people like helpers and friends on territories of Japan for many thousand years. Presumably they appeared together with Ainu mysterious generation in North of Japan, who lived isolated life in the whole Eastern world. Today this generation’s descendants live in the South of Hokkaido and Kuril Island as well as in the Sakhalin Island. These hunters and fishermen were the first inhabitants with their dogs. People used akita dogs in pairs to hold in check bears or black savage beasts, until the hunters would not arrive from their hunting. The most registers about breeding were made in feudal families in 17th century. In Tokugawa and Taisho families ( 1603-1925) was started the akita’s selective breeding in Edo period, V. Tokugawa Tsunayoshi shogun gave an instruction to every subject to be kind with the dogs in Family Act in 1687, because he was in sign of the dog. He was called Inu Kubo for his love to dogs and its meaning is ” dog shogun “. Furthermore Tsunoyoshi also ordered that every dog must ba called ” o-inu sama”, which means ” dog master “.
In the following period people used Akita dogs for dogfights. They often fought, so the race almost extinct. Fighting dogs were in demand, so they made hybrids with Tosa inu and some other dogs but these dogs were worthless. Around 1900, Akita dog race was becoming extinct and only typical individuals could be found near Odate town in Akita prefecture.
In 1908, dog fights were banned. The mayor Izumi of Odate started to propagate the Japanese pure breed line. This became the route for today’s Akita Inu breed. The Akita Inu Hozonkain club was established ( AKIHO ) in Odate town in 1927. This association conducted the pedigree and has determinative influence on its regulation development.
The Japanese Hirohito emperor announced this as a national memorial and treasure in 1931 ( every exports were benned). Nowdays Akita is proclaimed as a symbol of loyalty in Japan. There is a bronze Akita statue named ” Hachiko ” at the Shibuya trainstation in Tokyo from 1948, which represents its love and loyalty to its master.
Hachiko was a professor’s dog at the university in Tokyo. Hachiko followed him to the state in every morning and waited for him every afternoon. Uemo professor died from a heart attack in 1925, but Hachiko went regularly to the station and waited for his master after that, too. Hachiko was found dead at the place, where he waited a long time until 07.03.1937.
Hirochito emperor let have them built twelve lifesize bronze Akita dogs statues for their loyalty and self-devotion. These dogs set of on a journey with a Japanese expedition in the South Pole in 1957. The extremly severe weather conditions made the expedition members to turn back and giving up on hlaf way. So they to leave the part of their equipment and the dogs. Three years later the expedition returned to the same place and the twelve dogs sprung on them happily, who had hunted in hundred km from Ocean for surviving while they were waiting for the people, who left them there. After all they outride.
II. World War was a disastrous for Akita breeding because of the food stock loss, it was crime to feed the dogs, so they exterminated the animals but several individual survived the war. The general breeders were in Odate, who historically estabilished the exterior lead of Akita instead of hybrids in large quantities. The Japanese economic flourish ensured good field for saving this special race. In this time the Kongo-go and Kincho-go dog types were rated on dog-shows. The breeders of AKIHO association warned about dangerous consequences of these hybrid races. They were fatty, not elegant at all, their appearance were alike German shepherd’s, they were unacceptable.
In the USA Dewa type were growing by leaps and bound, which were brought on by soldiers after II. Word War. Fortunately there were caretakers for original Japanese Akita dog type. The AKIHO association was established a branch in Losa Angeles. From the different breeding governing principlesarose to different so called Japanese and American types. Theres were made changes to the Japanese black masked, gigantic body shaped in 1992, this ment the end of the dark colored Akita. American Akita was acknowledged as an independent race named the Big Japanese Dog by the JKC and FCI convention in Mexico in 1999. Witch this measure can be made different between the original Japanese Akita dog type breeding and the hybrid American type, which overlapped Europe and elsewhere. Akita is symbol of luck and health. In human’s respect should bring about harmony, mildness, beauty, elegance and warm feelin.
